San Jose Sharks General Manager Mike Grier announced today the acquisition of defenseman Timothy Liljegren from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In exchange, the Sharks will send defenseman Matt Benning, a conditional third-round pick in 2025, and a sixth-round pick in 2026. Toronto will receive the earlier of San Jose’s two third-round picks. Timothy Liljegren, 25, has played one game so far in the 2024-25 season.
Last year, he achieved career bests with 20 assists and an average ice time of 19:40, matching his career high with 23 points while with the Maple Leafs. He ranked fourth on the team in blocked shots with 116 and was eighth in power-play time on ice with 92:34. Over his NHL career, he has appeared in 197 games, all for Toronto, accumulating 65 points (14 goals, 51 assists) and a plus-38 rating. In addition, Liljegren has played parts of four seasons with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL, recording 74 points (11 goals, 63 assists) in 150 games.
He was instrumental in the Marlies’ Calder Cup victory in 2018, contributing four assists in 20 playoff games. Liljegren also played 38 games in the Swedish Hockey League for Rogle BK, scoring 10 points (2 goals, 8 assists). Internationally, he represented Sweden at the 2018 World Junior Championship, tallying two points (1 goal, 1 assist) in seven games, helping the team secure a Silver Medal. He also played in the 2023 World Championship, where he scored four points in five games (2 goals, 2 assists). Standing six-foot-one and weighing 201 pounds, the Kristianstad, Sweden native was selected by Toronto in the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft, going 17th overall.
