BREAKING: Proposed Commanders Trade Lands 49ers 2-Time 1,000-Yard Receiver

The Washington Commanders are yet to secure a replacement for Curtis Samuel, but according to Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport, there is a trade proposal that could address this gap. In the suggested deal with the San Francisco 49ers, the Commanders would acquire Brandon Aiyuk, a wide receiver who has reached the 1,000-yard mark twice.

Davenport’s proposition involves the Commanders giving up their 2024 second-round pick, 2024 third-round pick, and wide receiver Jahan Dotson.

“Aiyuk would be another massive step toward building around that quarterback. An Aiyuk/McLaurin pairing would likely rank among the league’s top 10 duos at the position. Cap space isn’t an issue—no team in the NFC has more.

“And while the second overall pick is too tall an ask, the Commanders have four Day 2 picks to play with. The team could also include Dotson, who is on a rookie contract for at least two more seasons, to sweeten the deal and reduce the sting of the 49ers not getting a first-rounder.”

Reasons the Commanders Might Benefit from Adding Aiyuk.

Apart from Terry McLaurin, the Washington Commanders only had one other receiver surpassing the 600-yard mark, which was Samuel. Following Samuel’s departure to the Buffalo Bills in free agency, adding Aiyuk would provide them with another standout receiver.

The Commanders acquired Austin Ekeler, who recorded 722 receiving yards in 2022. However, Ekeler’s production dipped to just 436 receiving yards in 2023, marking his lowest output in the past three seasons.

Holding the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Commanders could benefit from a player like Aiyuk to support their anticipated rookie quarterback.

While head coach Dan Quinn is confident that their current roster is equipped to support the success of the No. 2 pick, Aiyuk represents a player who fits the profile perfectly as outlined by Quinn. According to Nathaniel Marrero of Sports Illustrated, Quinn articulated the following sentiments:

“I believe that in any position, it is important to ensure you have the right support system in place. Do you have a balanced team? One of the crucial elements for any quarterback is having the ability to rely on a strong running game, as it sets up successful passing plays.

“If we have a potent running game and a solid defense that can generate turnovers, that framework is essential for any quarterback we aim to develop and sustain a balanced offensive strategy. This approach allows for explosive passing plays to flourish, and this philosophy is not unique to our current circumstances but exemplifies the type of team we aspire to be consistently.”

Quinn is seeking explosive passing plays originating from their running game and a stout defense. Aiyuk demonstrated precisely this in 2023, with eight games featuring receptions of at least 30 yards.

In 2023, the Commanders averaged just five yards per play, highlighting the need for an addition like Aiyuk, who boasted an average of 17.9 yards per reception. This acquisition could significantly boost their offensive capabilities.

Aiyuk is looking to secure a lucrative contract.

The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver is in the final year of his current contract. Aiyuk has openly stated his desire to receive a substantial contract, a move that the Washington Commanders could potentially make.

According to Spotrac, Aiyuk’s estimated market value is a four-year deal worth $96 million.

In a conversation with Ian Casselberry from Yahoo Sports, Aiyuk shared his perspective on his contract expectations:

“I am looking to be fairly compensated for my contributions,” Aiyuk stated.

“Throughout this season, I have gained a deeper understanding of my identity as both an individual and a player, recognizing the strengths I bring to the team, the positive influence I have within the locker room, and the overall impact I have on the organization. I am aware of the value I bring every time I step into that facility.

Even though securing Aiyuk at his market value would be expensive, the Commanders would be acquiring a 26-year-old player who is coming off his most impressive season to date.
