BREAKING: Steelers Bolster Squad Dept as they Sign Former Baltimore Ravens Veteran Starter Before 2024 Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers are bolstering their secondary by signing a former starting cornerback for their AFC North rivals, the Baltimore Ravens. This move comes as the Steelers look to add depth to their defensive backfield after releasing Keanu Neal and Patrick Peterson prior to the start of free agency, a decision made to create additional salary cap space. The Steelers are known for their aggressive approach in the offseason, and this latest signing demonstrates their commitment to strengthening their roster and preparing for the upcoming season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers added Donte Jackson in March

In March, the Pittsburgh Steelers acquired Donte Jackson to bolster their secondary in a trade that involved sending Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers. Despite this move, the Steelers are actively seeking further enhancements for their defensive backfield as they aim to strengthen the unit ahead of the upcoming season.

Averett is signing with the Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed cornerback Anthony Averett to a one-year contract, according to his agent Chad Wiestling. Averett participated in the Steelers’ rookie minicamp over the weekend on a tryout basis, impressing the coaching staff enough to earn a roster spot.

Despite spending time with the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions last season, Averett did not see any playing time in the regular season. This signing adds depth to the Steelers’ secondary as they continue to bolster their defensive backfield ahead of the upcoming NFL season.

Cornerback Anthony Averett was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Ravens, starting 27 games and appearing in 51 total games from 2018 to 2021. During his time in Baltimore, the 29-year-old Averett amassed 114 total tackles, 23 pass deflections, and three interceptions.

His experience and production with the Ravens likely factored into the Pittsburgh Steelers’ decision to sign him to a one-year deal after his impressive showing at their rookie minicamp. Averett will look to continue his NFL career in Pittsburgh as he aims to earn a roster spot and contribute to the Steelers’ secondary in the upcoming season.
