The Florida Panthers have expanded their group of reserve players, known as black aces, by recalling seven individuals in preparation for the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The players called up include forwards Mackie Samoskevich,
William Lockwood, Justin Sourdif, and Rasmus Asplund; defensemen Matt Kiersted and Mike Benning; and goaltender Magnus Hellberg, as reported by Colby Guy. These additions join Spencer Knight, who was recalled earlier, along with defensemen Uvis Balinskis, Josh Mahura, and Tobias Bjornfot as the extra players for Florida.
This strategic roster adjustment showcases the Panthers’ depth, with several of the recalled players having seen action in the NHL this season. While scoring may not have been a strong suit for these players in the NHL, their collective experience could be invaluable during the crucial playoff stretch.
Samoskevich and Asplund bring speed and technical prowess, while Sourdif and Lockwood offer physicality and tenacity, qualities essential for postseason success. Kiersted and Benning provide solid defensive play away from the puck, with Benning also showcasing strong puck-moving abilities. Positioned behind Balinskis, these defenders are poised to make a significant impact if called upon.
Florida finds itself in a relatively fortunate position for a playoff team, with only one injury to forward Sam Bennett and one player, Ryan Lomberg, affected by illness.
Coach Paul Maurice has indicated that Bennett is expected to return during the second round, although he will be sidelined for Game 1. In Bennett’s absence, Steven Lorentz has stepped up admirably, contributing two points in four playoff games. Asplund could potentially fill a depth center role if needed, but it appears that no immediate lineup changes are anticipated following the Panthers’ strong performance in the first round.
