During Game 2 of the National League Division Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, Manny Machado threw a baseball toward the Dodgers dugout, and the ball came close to hitting Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
On Monday, Roberts called the throw from Machado, who played for the Roberts and the Dodgers in 2018, “unsettling.”
“I didn’t notice it at the time. I really didn’t,” Roberts said to reporters. “I didn’t notice it. I did see the video. And it was unsettling. Obviously I have a relationship with Manny [Machado] from years past. There was intent behind it. It didn’t almost hit me because there was a net.
Dave Roberts said the ball Manny Machado threw in the Dodgers dugout last night almost hit him (though, he didn’t realize it until he saw a video of it afterward)

Roberts expressed: “That was very bothersome. If it was directed at me, I would consider it disrespectful. I’m unsure of his intent and don’t want to assume for him. I did watch the video, and it showed the ball coming at me with some intensity. However, I’m not aware of the circumstances that led to this; I didn’t witness it live, but I viewed the video later.”
The video of the incident involving Roberts is currently under review by MLB, but Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reported that it’s unlikely either team will face any discipline for the events during Game 2.
MLB is not expected to discipline anyone for anything that happened in Game 2 of the Dodgers-Padres series.

Padres manager Mike Shildt commented on Machado’s throw, stating, “No, I don’t believe there was any intent behind that.”
Shildt also seemed to indirectly criticize Roberts for his remarks about Machado, saying, “I’m not, nor will I ever, disparage another player on a different team, especially those I’ve managed before. I won’t do that to any team as a whole. That’s not my preferred way of operating.”
The Padres and Dodgers are set to compete again on Tuesday, as they vie for victory in Game 3 of the NLDS at Petco Park.
