Breaking Now: Tua Tagovailoa, Dolphins Agree to 4-Year, $212.4M Contract Extension

The Miami Dolphins remain committed to Tua Tagovailoa.

Miami and the quarterback agreed to a new four-year, $212.4 million contract on Friday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo. The deal includes $167.1 million guaranteed.

Miami designated Tagovailoa as its franchise quarterback by selecting him with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, the same year that other quarterbacks like Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, and Jalen Hurts were also drafted.

However, the Alabama product faced inconsistency at the start of his career, which fueled various trade rumors. Miami was even linked to Tom Brady following the quarterback’s retirement, and Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reported that the team would “explore all options” at quarterback before deciding to exercise Tagovailoa’s fifth-year option.

Ultimately, the decision was to retain Tua on a longer contract after he showed improvement over the past two seasons, supported by teammates Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Hill, in particular, expressed his satisfaction with the news of his quarterback’s new deal.

While Miami faced disappointment with a first-round exit in the playoffs, Tagovailoa managed to play in every game. This was a significant development, considering that injuries had been a major concern for him after suffering multiple concussions in 2022, which sidelined him during the postseason.

Now, the Dolphins are optimistic that he can maintain his recent progress and achieve some postseason success, especially after showing renewed confidence in him with their decision on Friday.
