Breaking now: This isn’t the first time something like this has happened: Assistant coach Mitch Johnson has to step in as the head coach

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich missed Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves due to an undisclosed illness.

Assistant coach Mitch Johnson stepped in as head coach, having received notice just 2½ hours before the game that the 75-year-old Popovich would not be able to coach. “He’s not feeling well,” Johnson stated. “This isn’t the first time something like this has happened. Everyone always needs to be prepared for the next person to step up. We’ve dealt with injuries before, and sometimes people get sick or personal issues arise. He’s just not well at the moment.

Popovich holds the record for the most victories in NBA history, with 1,390, along with 170 wins in the postseason, and he has led the Spurs to five NBA championships. He is currently in his 29th season with the franchise.
