The San Antonio Spurs have had a solid start to the season with a record of 4-5, but it could have been better. Several key players, including Devin Vassell, Tre Jones, and Jeremy Sochan, as well as coach Gregg Popovich, have missed time due to injuries and illness, limiting the team’s potential.
However, the Spurs announced on Friday that Vassell is “probable” for Saturday’s game against the Utah Jazz. The fifth-year guard has yet to play this season while recovering from foot surgery, but he is expected to bring much-needed offense and spacing to the squad. Outside of Victor Wembanyama, Vassell is the Spurs’ best offensive player. Last season, he averaged 19.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.1 steals, with a 3-point shooting percentage of 37.2%.
With Vassell back, opposing teams won’t be able to focus exclusively on Wembanyama, creating more space for him to operate. Chris Paul has been performing well this season, and adding another reliable shooter alongside him will provide the Spurs with more offensive options. While Vassell may not be an elite defender, he can hold his own against top players, and with Sochan out, he’ll likely face tougher defensive assignments.
If the Spurs integrate him into a lineup with Paul, Wembanyama, and Stephon Castle, they can effectively funnel opponents toward the rim, where Wembanyama can protect the basket.
