The Pittsburgh Pirates made several roster changes on Monday to enhance their depth, including the decision to part ways with four players.

The Pirates declined the $ 15 million club option on left-handed starting pitcher Marco Gonzales on Saturday, which has now made him a free agent. Gonzales, 32, had a record of 1-1 with a 4.54 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 33 2/3 innings over seven starts but spent a significant portion of the season on the injured list.

The team also reinstated right-handed starter Johan Oviedo, relievers Dauri Moreta and Hunter Stratton, as well as catcher/infielder Endy Rodríguez from the 60-day injured list. To accommodate these players, the Pirates removed righty relievers Ben Heller, Daulton Jefferies, and Isaac Mattson from the 40-man roster after they cleared waivers.

Cabbage, 27, is a left-handed hitter who has a batting average of .209 across two major league seasons, totaling 67 games. He is noted for ranking in the 92nd percentile in arm strength, according to Statcast. Last season, he batted .310 against fastballs but struggled against breaking balls, hitting just .080 with 17 strikeouts.

In 2023, Cabbage played in 22 games with the Los Angeles Angels, achieving 11 hits in 53 at-bats along with three doubles, one home run, and seven RBIs. He is capable of playing all three outfield positions and has also played at first base.

The player claimed off waivers is Trey Cabbage from the Houston Astros.
