Breaking Now: Pirates Begin Offseason by Acquiring Veteran Power-Hitting Prospect, Providing Valuable Depth to Roster.

The Pittsburgh Pirates began their offseason moves by reacquiring infielder  on waivers, a choice that may not excite fans but appears sensible upon closer review.

The Pirates originally drafted Gray in 2017 from Rice University, and he was soon traded to the Rays. Over his five-year stint in the Rays’ system, Gray developed into a power hitter, belting 63 home runs in 2022 and 2023 combined, though he only had a brief major league debut in 2023.

Gray has since spent time in the Marlins and Athletics organizations, hitting .251 with 19 home runs in Triple-A during 2024 while also making a few appearances in the majors. Despite his low average, his left-handed power could be an asset at PNC Park if he transitions to the majors successfully.

Given the Pirates’ infield uncertainties, Gray provides valuable depth, especially with no immediate first-base solution in the system and health concerns surrounding Ke’Bryan Hayes. He’ll likely start in Triple-A but could be called up if needed. If Gray’s power-hitting abilities translate to the majors, he may find a longer-term role with the team, although he could face stiff competition as the Pirates continue to shape their roster.
