Mitch Marner is not allowing his upcoming free agency to interfere with his goals for the season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The talented forward, who has been with the team since he was drafted in 2015, downplayed the significance of his contract situation on his mindset. Instead, Marner emphasized that he is concentrating on his daily responsibilities and contributing to the team’s success on the ice for the rest of the season. “I honestly really just haven’t thought about it,” Marner told TSN’s James Duthie, according to Leafs Latest on X. “When I’m at the rink, I’m a hockey player, but outside of that, I’m just a person, and I have wonderful family and friends who help keep my mind off things and make it enjoyable.”
Capture, regarded as part of the Leafs’ “Core Four” along with Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and John Tavares, is on track for his best season yet in terms of points. He has tallied 38 points in 27 games, averaging 1.41 points per game. This performance reflects his commitment to staying focused on his on-ice play rather than concerning himself with what might happen next.
“I try to focus on other things besides hockey when I’m at home,” Marner said, according to David Alter of The Hockey News. “Once I arrive at the rink, that’s when I concentrate and recognize the work that needs to be done. I just want to do my job and help the team win games.” If Marner maintains his scoring pace, he could finish the season with 115 points, assuming he plays all 81 regular-season games (he has missed one so far). His previous career-high is 99 points, achieved during the 2022-23 season.
