On Thursday night, the Dallas Mavericks faced off against the Houston Rockets at home, ultimately losing 108-102.
Despite the defeat, Kyrie Irving had a strong performance, scoring 28 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and providing seven assists while shooting 10 of 20 from the field and 5 of 6 from beyond the arc in 43 minutes of play. After the game, the 2016 NBA Champion shared some candid thoughts during his media interview. When asked about the perspective he offers to the younger players on the team because of his experience, Irving stated, “Sure, we had success last year, but that doesn’t matter now; we haven’t achieved anything this season. The champions are the Boston Celtics. We’re proud of winning the Western Conference championship, but for this group, we haven’t accomplished anything.”
The Mavericks are off to a 3-2 start in their first five games of the new season. Kyrie Irving is averaging 24.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, shooting 47.9% from the field and an impressive 59.4% from beyond the arc. After facing the Rockets, the Mavericks will host the Orlando Magic in Dallas on Sunday. This marks Irving’s third season with the team. Meanwhile, the Rockets also improved to 3-2 through their first five games. Following their matchup with the Mavericks, the Rockets will play their next game on Saturday evening against Draymond Green and the Golden State Warriors at home in Houston.
