The Boston Celtics have already instilled fear in other NBA teams due to their exceptional talent and recent championship victory. However, Jaylen Brown made them sound even more intimidating on the latest episode of “Hot Ones,” as reported by Daniel Donabedian. Brown explained that head coach Joe Mazzulla has developed what he refers to as a “killer whale offense.” This approach is based on the concept that killer whales operate in groups, analyze their targets, and then strike together. “We kind of structured our offense around that,” Brown elaborated.
Mazzulla is known for making quirky and somewhat amusing remarks like this one, but they often prove effective for his team. The Celtics clearly possess one of the top offenses in the league, which enabled them to secure their 18th championship banner just a few months ago.
Jaylen Brown revealed the Celtics are running a “Killer Whale Offense” on “Hot Ones.” Joe Mazzulla, of course, coined the phrase 🐳
“We attack seals. We study how killer whales attack as a unit. And we kinda built our offense off [that].”

The roster features many players capable of shooting from nearly any position, and Mazzulla’s strategies frequently disrupt opponents’ defensive plans. According to Brown, they closely analyze their opponents to pinpoint weak areas to exploit. This approach has been highly successful, even against formidable defenses. While it led to triumph in the 2023-24 season, it remains to be seen whether the same will hold true in 2024-25.
It’s certainly possible, but other teams may have figured out how to counter the Celtics’ strategies. The Celtics now have a significant target on their backs, with every other team looking to take down Brown and his teammates. Last season, this killer whale offense was outstanding, but it will face even greater challenges in the upcoming months.
