Breaking now: ESPN’s Shams Charania Report: The New York Knicks have received disappointing news about center Mitchell Robinson’s injuries.

The New York Knicks have received unfortunate news regarding center Mitchell Robinson’s injuries. ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that Robinson, who had ankle surgery in the offseason, is expected to be out for the rest of the calendar year and won’t return until 2025.

Charania reports that Robinson is targeting a January return. After undergoing two ankle surgeries in the past year, it’s understandable that the Knicks are taking a cautious approach with his recovery. Last season, the 26-year-old played only 31 games, averaging 5.6 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 1.1 blocks in 24.8 minutes per game, shooting 57.5% from the field. He was drafted by the Knicks in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft. When healthy, Robinson is a formidable presence, known for being one of the league’s top interior defenders and rim protectors. However, staying healthy has been a significant challenge for him throughout his NBA career. He has only played 70 games in a season once, during the 2021-22 season, when he averaged 8.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game. In the last few seasons, Robinson has only appeared in a total of 90 games. His career averages stand at eight points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game, with an impressive field-goal percentage of 70.1%. With the offseason loss of Isaiah Hartenstein, Robinson’s extended absence in the first half of the season is disappointing for the Knicks. Despite being active in the offseason with trades for Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns, solidifying one of the league’s most impressive starting lineups, the Knicks are facing concerns about their frontcourt depth.
