BREAKING NOW: East Carolina fires coach Mike Houston after 5 seasons

East Carolina has terminated coach Mike Houston after five seasons.

Athletic director Jon Gilbert announced this on Sunday, a day after the Pirates (3-4) lost to No. 23 Army 45-28. Defensive coordinator Blake Harrell will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season.

“After earning back-to-back bowl invitations, we appeared ready for continued success,” said Gilbert regarding the bowl appearances in 2021-22. “Unfortunately, we haven’t achieved the results we desire, and a change is necessary to advance the program.”

Last season, the Pirates concluded with a 2-10 record and held a 27-38 record under Houston since he began in 2019.

At James Madison, Houston won an FCS national championship in 2016.
