Michigan men’s basketball secured its first victory of the 2024-25 season earlier this week, and the Wolverines are also making significant progress in recruiting. On Saturday, head coach Dusty May achieved a major recruiting win when five-star combo guard Trey McKenney from Flint (Mich.) St. Mary’s announced his commitment to Michigan. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound player selected the Wolverines from his final three choices, which included Georgetown and USC.
According to 247Sports’ Composite rankings, McKenney is ranked as the No. 19 overall prospect, the No. 3 combo guard, and the No. 1 player from Michigan in the 2025 recruiting class. The Flint native has received 35 scholarship offers throughout his recruitment, with Michigan State, Kansas, Indiana, Illinois, Texas, Tennessee, and Ohio State among those expressing interest. Ultimately, May and the Wolverines succeeded in keeping McKenney in his home state. 247Sports director of recruiting Adam Finkelstein provides the following assessment of McKenney’s skills: “McKenney is a powerful scoring guard with a distinctive combination of size and a long 6-foot-9 wingspan. He has an aggressive scoring style and a strong understanding of how to use his physicality in his game. He is tough, resourceful, talented with his left hand, and particularly skilled at scoring over defenders in the mid-range. “Though McKenney sometimes opts for difficult shots and can be prone to turnovers, he is an underrated playmaker when he has the ball.
He shows potential in ball-screen situations and has a natural feel for the game that complements his strength. “McKenney is an excellent free-throw shooter (92%), but he doesn’t get to the line often enough to maximize his scoring potential, particularly considering his size. His long-range shot is still developing, but he has made significant improvements, hitting 36% on nearly six attempts per game in the EYBL. “Defensively, he generally shows a willingness to compete, but he can be limited by his lateral quickness. Improving his foot speed will be important for him to enhance his conditioning while maintaining his strong build, which is a key aspect of his game. McKenney is also an outstanding rebounding guard.” May and his coaching staff have done a fantastic job of revamping Michigan’s roster since their arrival, and now the head coach is assembling a promising 2025 recruiting class for the future. Alongside McKenney, the Wolverines also have commitments from four-star small forward
