BREAKING NEWS: Walters, Bellamy talks fire Pangai’s NRL return quest

Tevita Pangai Jr is set to retire from boxing to focus on revitalizing his rugby league career. Following discussions with Brisbane coach Kevin Walters and Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy, the former NRL player is reassured about his decision.

Pangai Jr, currently under contract with Souths Logan Magpies in the Queensland Cup, is preparing for his final professional boxing match this Saturday. After this bout, he plans to dedicate himself entirely to rugby league once again. Reflecting on his conversations with Walters and Bellamy, Pangai Jr feels encouraged by their feedback. Walters emphasized his potential in rugby league, while Bellamy highlighted the need for consistency in his career, a point Pangai Jr acknowledges and aims to address upon his return to the sport.

Both discussions have reignited my passion and determination to excel in the NRL.

I am focusing on what I can influence, maintaining a proper diet, and training rigorously. Currently weighing 114kg, a weight favored by Wayne Bennett during my time at the Broncos, I am committed to showcasing my best performance,” Pangai Jr expressed.

As of Thursday, Pangai Jr’s conversation with Bellamy had not progressed to formal talks with the club’s recruitment and retention committee. His manager and brother, David Pangai, will handle any negotiations with NRL clubs interested in his services.

Having played the majority of his NRL games at the Broncos, Pangai Jr, who was released by Canterbury last year to pursue boxing professionally, understands the necessity of securing an NRL contract to compete at the elite level. Without a contract, he cannot be elevated from the second-tier Magpies to the Broncos.

It is improbable that the NRL salary-cap auditor would permit the signing of Pangai on anything less than a standard NRL contract, ruling out options like an NRL train-and-trial deal. Despite the Broncos having a vacant top-30 slot, financial constraints currently prevent them from securing Pangai’s services.

Walters acknowledged the potential value Pangai could bring to the team, noting the positive impact his boxing career may have had on his mindset. Transitioning from an individual sport like boxing to the team dynamics of rugby league could potentially enhance Pangai’s performance by instilling a deeper sense of teamwork and sacrifice for the collective goal.
