The Miami Dolphins became victorious in the 2022 Tyreek Hill sweepstakes. Still, the Dolphins receiver’s present predicament may serve as a sobering reminder of what it was like to be the Chiefs in a same circumstance.
NFL analyst Kristopher Knox declined to rule out Hill’s possible departure in a recent Bleacher Report story.
The issue is that Hill might have trouble getting the Dolphins to give him the contract he wants. Currently holding $15.3 million in cap space, Miami is expected to exceed the threshold by $12.8 million in the upcoming season and needs to finalize a deal with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
It’s simple to argue that Hill would be crazy to pursue money elsewhere given Miami’s standing as a postseason contender, but we’ve seen this happen before. In 2022, Hill was traded by the Kansas City Chiefs due to his desire for a new contract, according to Knox.
Of course, age is the primary distinction between the Dolphins’ predicament and the Chiefs’ with regard to Hill.
At the age of 28, Hill began his career with the Dolphins. He’ll be in his 30s now. Regardless of Hill’s recent performance, the wide receiver position could command a different price in the market than it did in the previous negotiation.
While playing for the Dolphins, Hill has solely experienced personal achievement. With 1710 yards and seven touchdowns in 2022, the wide receiver had the best season of his career to start his stay. According to Pro Football Reference, he then eclipsed both totals once more in 2023, totaling 1799 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Miami now has the upper hand, and despite this astounding production, he finds himself outside of the top 30. Hill is already contracted through the 2026 season, according to Spotrac. In 2025, the Dolphins will have a financial incentive to sever connections if he plays hardball with them. Hill will be free to test the market if that occurs.
Having said that, every side in the league is aware that, as he approaches his 31st birthday, Hill’s value will only decrease owing to his rising danger of injuries. Thus, Hill’s only chance for an NFL rise appears to be this offseason, even if he is still probably in line for a big contract. Will Tyreek Hill’s demands be granted by the Dolphins?
