General Manager Ross Atkins revealed that a Toronto Blue Jays jersey bearing Anthony Santander’s name had been “floating around our office” throughout the offseason.
Santander finally donned that jersey during a Zoom press conference on Tuesday, a day after finalizing a five-year, $92.5 million deal with the team.
“Looks great on me already,” Santander quipped with a smile.
The contract includes an opt-out clause and a team option for 2030, along with escalators that could increase its value to $110 million.
“The process was really smooth,” Santander said. “From the beginning, there was great communication back and forth. It may have taken a bit longer than expected, but we got what we wanted. I’m here now, and the process couldn’t have gone better.”
The 30-year-old outfielder earned his first All-Star selection last season, his eighth and final year with the Baltimore Orioles. He hit .235 while setting career highs with 44 home runs, 102 RBIs, and 91 runs scored in 155 games.
Now a member of the Blue Jays, Santander joins a potent lineup featuring stars like George Springer, Bo Bichette, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
“I’m excited about this opportunity,” Santander said. “I can’t wait to be with my brothers. From day one of spring training, it’s about working hard, improving every day, and chasing a championship.”
He remarked, “That’s what we’re aiming for. That’s the reason I’m here.”
The Blue Jays secured playoff spots as wild card teams in 2020, 2022, and 2023, but they ended up last in the AL East last year with a record of 74-88.
“Anthony is about as perfect a fit as we could find,” Atkins stated. “He can hit from both sides of the plate and consistently drive the ball out of the park. His capacity to make an impact every night aligns perfectly with what we were seeking, making him a valuable addition to our lineup.”
As a switch-hitter capable of hitting for power from either side, Santander has averaged 35 home runs, 95 RBIs, and played 153 games over the last three seasons.
He marks the Blue Jays’ first significant free agent signing this winter.
