Following Nakobe Dean’s season-ending injury, the Eagles have signed veteran linebacker Nicholas Morrow to their practice squad, as reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Morrow, 29, spent the 2023 season with the Eagles, starting at middle linebacker and wearing the green dot for much of the year. He returns now to provide some much-needed depth.
In 2023, Morrow played in 15 games, starting 12, after beginning the season as the Bears’ starter in 2022. It wasn’t a standout year for Morrow or for the Eagles’ defense, but he boasts 105 career games and 58 starts.
The Eagles will certainly feel the loss of Dean, who suffered a torn patellar tendon against the Packers and faces a lengthy recovery that could extend into part of the 2025 season.
In response to Dean’s injury, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio mentioned splitting reps between veteran Oren Burks and rookie Jeremiah Trotter Jr., alongside All-Pro Zack Baun, in Philadelphia’s defense.
The addition of Morrow seems to be primarily about adding depth and bolstering special teams. This season, he appeared in 11 games for the Buffalo Bills, where most of his contributions came on special teams. Morrow logged 182 special teams snaps during his time with Buffalo. After spending the first 12 weeks with the Bills, he was released, signed, and then cut again, making him a free agent since January 3.
In 2023, when he was primarily a starter for the Eagles, Morrow still contributed 116 special teams snaps under special teams coordinator Michael Clay.
