The Georgia Bulldogs are two weeks removed from a season-ending loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. Head coach Kirby Smart has already turned his focus to next season, working on finalizing his roster and coaching staff. On Tuesday, rumors began to spread about offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.
Former Bulldogs quarterback Buck Belue shared on “The Buck Belue Show” that, according to his sources, Bobo is set to step down next week due to health issues. “I’ve been working some sources close to the program, and what I’m hearing is that Mike Bobo will be stepping down next week, will resign,”
Belue said. “Mike has got some health issues that he’s dealing with. And you may have heard about this autoimmune disease that he’s dealing with. Nerve damage in his arm, in his feet, makes it difficult to walk.”
This quickly sent Georgia fans into a frenzy. However, several hours later, Radi Nabulsi of UGASports.com took to X to confirm Bobo “has no plans” to leave. “Contrary to the rumors spreading all over social media, Mike Bobo has no plans to step down as the University of Georgia offensive coordinator.”
It’s also worth noting that Rusty Mansell of DawgsHQ reported Bobo was “on the road and recruiting” Texas commit Dia Bell on Thursday night. Bell took to X to announce that he had received an offer from Georgia, tagging Bobo in the post.
“Blessed and thankful to have received an offer from @GeorgiaFootball @KirbySmartUGA @CoachMikeBobo @CoachColey,” Bell wrote.
With Bobo remaining in Athens, this is great news for Smart, who would have faced the challenge of finding a new offensive coordinator before the 2025 season. However, Georgia fans aren’t as excited about Bobo’s return, given that the offensive struggles in 2024. The Bulldogs ranked 10th in the SEC for yards per game (405.4) and 5th in points per game (31.6), a noticeable drop from 2023, when they finished second in both categories.
“Well this is disappointing. He needs to move on or Georgia should fire him,” one fan said. More mediocre football awaits us then,” another wrote. “Welp another year of no national championships,” added another. “Most depressing news I’ve heard today,” one added. “Dang. I was hoping we would have a chance to win another Natty,” wrote a fan.
Even if Bobo considered leaving Georgia, it wouldn’t be an easy decision for him. He played quarterback for the Bulldogs from 1993-97 and has since spent three separate stints on the coaching staff, holding various roles including graduate assistant, quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator and offensive analyst.
