LOS ANGELES — Reports indicate that former Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has joined the Los Angeles Chargers’ practice squad.
Elliott, 29, was released by the Cowboys on December 31, just before the final game of the regular season, with hopes of signing with a playoff contender. The former Ohio State standout has now linked up with the Chargers in time for their AFC Wild Card matchup against the Houston Texans on Saturday.
Ezekiel Elliott has recorded 226 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 74 carries for the Cowboys this season. His addition provides much-needed depth to a Chargers’ running back group dealing with injuries, including former Ohio State standout J.K. Dobbins, who recently returned from a knee sprain, and Gus Edwards, who has missed the last two games with an ankle issue.
The Chargers have not yet confirmed whether Elliott will be active for their playoff game against the AFC South champion Texans. The matchup is set for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Eastern at NRG Stadium in Houston.
Selected fourth overall by the Cowboys in the 2016 NFL Draft, Elliott is now in his ninth NFL season. The three-time Pro Bowler has amassed 9,130 rushing yards on 2,139 carries (4.3 yards per carry) with 74 touchdowns, in addition to 368 receptions for 2,718 yards and 14 touchdowns throughout his career.
