Former Miami Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis was discovered deceased at a residence in Southwest Ranches on Monday, as reported by the police.
Davis, aged 35, was found by his assistant in the morning at the home on Southwest 178th Avenue, prompting a 911 call. Sgt. Kelvin Urbaez from Davie Police confirmed these details in an email on Monday afternoon.
Davis, hailing from Washington, D.C., was brought up by his grandmother, Adeline Davis, as indicated in his University of Illinois biography. At the university, he excelled in college football and pursued a major in speech communication.
Notably, he was the younger sibling of Vernon Davis, a distinguished NFL player known for his two Pro Bowl appearances as a tight end. County property records reveal that the residence where Davis was discovered on Monday morning is owned by his grandmother. Furthermore, Broward County court records list this address as Davis’s official residence.
There is no suspicion of foul play by investigators, and the police department has not disclosed further details.Davis, a first-round pick of the Dolphins in 2009 at the 25th spot, spent three seasons with Miami before being traded to the Indianapolis Colts on August 27, 2012, prior to his fourth NFL season.
Jim Irsay, the CEO of the Colts, expressed deep sorrow over Vontae Davis’s passing in a social media post, stating, “Extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Vontae Davis. During his brief stint with the Buffalo Bills in 2018, Vontae Davis made headlines by retiring at halftime of his first game against the Los Angeles Chargers. In February 2023, Davis was taken into custody for a DUI offense following a collision with the rear of a stationary truck. The impact caused the truck to move, striking and injuring the owner who was beside it at the time, as detailed in the arrest report.
Despite this incident, the court opted for withheld adjudication, indicating no conviction, and imposed a probation sentence that was scheduled to conclude later in the same month.
