A free agent from the New York Jets may remain in the AFC East this offseason.
According to NFL Insider Aaron Wilson’s social media post, defensive lineman Carl Lawson met with the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday, April 10.
Injuries prevented the Jets from realizing their plans for free agent Lawson.
In 2021, the Jets signed Lawson to a three-year contract worth $45 million with high hopes.
During the initial months after his signing, the Jets were extremely optimistic about his potential. Despite Lawson not having achieved a double-digit sack season previously as a former Auburn player, the team had faith in analytics.
Early on, Lawson drew lofty comparisons to legendary player Lawrence Taylor, with some Jets staff members even describing him as “unblockable” in text messages.
However, Jets supporters never got to witness this on the field as, unfortunately, Lawson suffered an Achilles injury during a joint practice with the Green Bay Packers, causing him to miss the entire 2021 season. In 2022, Lawson played with a compromised Achilles due to another injury.
Even with this new injury, Lawson managed to play in every game of the 2022 season, registering seven sacks.
During the previous season, he participated in just six games without any starts and for the first time in his career, he did not make a sack.
At 28 years old, Lawson suffered a back injury during training camp, causing him to sit out for a month. This setback impacted his performance for the remainder of the year.
