BREAKING NEWS: Deputy dies 2 days after on-duty crash, sheriff announces

A deputy in Montgomery County, Alabama, who was severely injured in an on-duty collision on Wednesday, passed away from his injuries, as confirmed by Sheriff Derrick Cunningham late Friday evening.

Deputy Jermyius Young, aged 21, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at UAB Hospital in Birmingham on Friday night.

In a statement posted on social media, Sheriff Cunningham described Deputy Young as a dedicated and skilled law enforcement officer, highlighting his loyalty, selflessness, and effectiveness.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the department investigating the incident, Young was in a collision in his patrol car on Wednesday at approximately 7 p.m.

Investigators reported that the solo-vehicle accident occurred on Hobbie Road in the 4500 block, situated in the southern part of Montgomery County. The exact cause of the crash is still being investigated.

After the crash, the deputy was initially taken to Baptist Medical Center South before being transferred to UAB Hospital.

Sheriff Cunningham mentioned in an interview on Thursday that he received a distressing call on Wednesday. He rushed to the hospital to support the deputy and his family.

Describing the emotional scene at the hospital, the sheriff noted the overwhelming presence of the deputy’s colleagues, including those who had trained alongside him at the academy. He expressed how challenging it is for law enforcement during such critical situations and emphasized the power of prayer during such difficult times.

Cunningham praised Young as a role model, not only for his fellow deputies but also for himself. The sheriff mentioned that Young consistently arrived at work with a cheerful demeanor.

Young had been serving in the sheriff’s office since he was 18 years old.
