The Baltimore Orioles organization was devastated by the tragic passing of minor league player Luis Guevara, who died at age 19 following a jet ski accident at South Lido Beach in Sarasota, Florida, on Father’s Day.

When the news first broke through Orioles On SI, few details were available regarding the circumstances of the accident.

However, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner (subscription required) later shared additional information based on an account from eyewitness Mariah Gonzalez. She described seeing two jet skis being operated recklessly near the beach, coming dangerously close to both boats and children in the water.

“I was worried something bad was going to happen,” she told Kostka.

Gonzalez’s version of events differs from the official police report. According to authorities, the jet ski carrying Guevara and Keiver Jose Guillen Reatiga (whose connection to Guevara is unclear) had stalled in the water. Meanwhile, Orioles prospects Miguel Rodriguez (19) and Jesus Palacios (20) were on a second jet ski. They told police that as they approached the stalled watercraft, they hit a wave that launched their jet ski into the air.

“The riders lost complete control and jumped off. While airborne, the jet ski struck both Reatiga and Guevara, knocking them into the water,” the police report stated.

However, Gonzalez offered a slightly different account. From her perspective, one of the two—either Guevara or Reatiga—was already in the water while the other stood on the stalled jet ski, seemingly trying to signal the oncoming watercraft to avoid a collision.

“He looked over and could see another jet ski coming almost full force, and was going extremely fast. The guy that was on the jet ski, he was waving his arms, yelling stop in Spanish — ‘Para! Para! Para!’ — and just yelling and waving his arms so the other person coming his way would see him,” Gonzalez said, per Kostka. “He was screaming very loud, and he was standing up. I don’t understand how that was missed.”

She added, “That jet ski hit the guy in the head, almost directly hit the upper part of his body, and he went flying into the water.”

Gonzalez said she immediately called 911 while others rushed into the water to assist those who had been involved in the crash, with two men being brought to shore.

In the incident report, Reatiga was described to have suffered “obvious severe trauma to his face” despite him being conscious and breathing. Additional information stated that he suffered facial fractures and lung damage.

The report also stated that Guevara suffered internal trauma and brain trauma, ultimately causing him to pass away at the age of 19.
