When the Cincinnati Bengals picked tight end Drew Sample from the Washington Huskies as the 52nd overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, it appeared to be an underwhelming choice.
Often perceived as lacking in downfield receiving skills and more suited for blocking duties, Sample did not fit the mold of the dynamic pass-catching tight ends that have excelled in the modern NFL, exemplified by players like Travis Kelce and Rob Gronkowski. Consequently, he did not garner much favor with fans.
However, following the expiry of his rookie contract, Sample signed a one-year deal for the 2023 season. He then became part of a formidable tight end group alongside Irv Smith Jr., Mitchell Wilcox, and later Tanner Hudson, collectively contributing 686 yards and four touchdowns.
Sample demonstrated proficiency as a willing blocker, impressively receiving a PFF pass-blocking grade of 68.1 and a run-blocking grade of 61.5. Yet, beyond his blocking skills, he surprised everyone with his performance:

Now, the Bengals have re-signed him for an additional three years with a contract worth 3.5 million per year. He will be joined by Mike Gesicki, who signed a one-year deal with the Bengals, and Tanner Hudson, who was also re-signed for a one-year deal.
Sample is expected to primarily fulfill the role of a blocking back and serve as the TE2 in specific formations. However, there is always a chance he could receive the ball in tight situations
