Jon Abbott Named New Calgary Flames Play-by-Play Announcer on Sportsnet.
Sportsnet has announced that Jon Abbott will be the new play-by-play voice for the Calgary Flames on their broadcasts. Abbott will join game analysts Kelly Hrudey and Greg Millen in the Sportsnet booth, with Ryan Leslie serving as the host and providing updates from around the rink.
In a statement, Abbott expressed his excitement about the opportunity, saying:
“The hockey world is a small one and often provides full circle moments. Growing up in Aylmer, ON, my minor hockey team was named the Flames because of funding provided by a former owner of the Calgary Flames, the late Harley Hotchkiss. Mr. Hotchkiss was from the neighbouring community of Tillsonburg, and just as the Flames ownership continues to do today, he always supported his community through his love for the game. It is an honour to join both the Sportsnet and Flames families over 30 years later, and I look forward to many years of great hockey memories in Calgary.
Abbott, who previously worked for TSN, is expected to bring his knowledge and passion for the game to the Flames’ broadcasts. He will be tasked with providing play-by-play commentary alongside the experienced analysts Hrudey and Millen, while Leslie will provide updates and insights from around the NHL.
The addition of Abbott to the Sportsnet team is seen as a positive move, as he is known for his professionalism and dedication to the sport. Fans are eager to see how he will contribute to the Flames’ broadcasts and help bring the team’s games to life for viewers across the country.
Jon Abbott has an impressive background in sports broadcasting, having launched his career at Rogers TV and accumulating over 24 years of experience. Abbott now joins the Calgary Flames’ regional broadcast team on Sportsnet after previous roles in Toronto, Vancouver, and most recently, Ottawa.
