In Tuesday’s ReliaQuest Bowl, Michigan football defeated Alabama 19–13 while limiting the No. 11 Crimson Tide to 260 yards. After a season marred by injuries and a few underwhelming games, it was the second consecutive dominant performance by the Wolverines defense under coordinator Wink Martindale. Martindale warned college football about the Wolverines’ defense on Wednesday.
Martindale posted on X, “Fast, violent, and physical all the way til the end.” “I’m proud of our guys and their fighting style. We have only just begun. #StayBuckled #BuildingaBully,” he continued. Martindale, the self-described “OG” of the defensive scheme Michigan employed to defeat Michael Penix Jr. and win the national championship the previous season, seems to be getting used to it. As he signed off on X, he included a question directed at the recruiting circuit. Martindale questioned, “Who wants to be a Michigan Man?”
Under Martindale, Michigan’s defense struggled for much of the season without injured star cornerback Will Johnson and lost another star defensive back, Rod Moore, at the end of the season, resulting in the team finishing 12th in total defense injury at the beginning of the season.
