BREAKING: Michigan Football Assistant Coach Leaves team, Headed for Special Teams Coordinator Position – 2024 Offseason

Jay Harbaugh Leaves Michigan Football After Nine Seasons

The Michigan football program is going through more changes in their coaching staff following their victory in the 2023 College Football National Championship. Head coach Jim Harbaugh departed for the NFL to lead the Los Angeles Chargers, and the team promoted offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore to take his place. Quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell was then promoted to handle offensive play calling. Unfortunately, they now have to find a replacement for their special teams coordinator as well. According to NFL insider Ari Meirov, the current special teams coordinator, Jay Harbaugh, is likely to join the Seattle Seahawks in the same role.

As per Meirov, it seems that the younger Harbaugh will not be joining his father in Los Angeles. The Chargers are expected to retain Ryan Ficken as their special teams coordinator, according to Meirov.

The son of former Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh, Jay began his coaching career as an intern with the San Francisco 49ers. He then transitioned to a student assistant role at Oregon State University from 2008 to 2011. After spending four years with the Beavers, he became an analyst with the Baltimore Ravens, where he worked under his uncle, John Harbaugh. While with the Ravens, they defeated the San Francisco 49ers, coached by his father, in the Super Bowl.

In 2015, Jay Harbaugh joined his father at Michigan as the tight ends coach and assistant special teams coordinator for two seasons. He was later promoted to special teams coordinator in 2017, a position he has held since. Despite this, he also worked as the running backs coach from 2017 to 2020, as the tight ends coach in 2021, and as the safeties coach for the past two seasons.

Last season, Jay Harbaugh achieved his first official college football victory as a head coach when the Wolverines defeated the UNLV Rebels 35-7 during his father’s three-game suspension.
