BREAKING: Miami’s impressive spring transfer portal collection has grown by one more outstanding player as Louisville EDGE commits to Miami

With excellent players, Miami currently boasts one of the best defensive rooms in the nation. Tyler Baron, an EDGE, is scheduled to join the Hurricanes in 2024.
Miami’s impressive spring transfer portal collection has grown by one more outstanding player.

The much-touted EDGE Tyler Baron pledged to Miami on Tuesday night. According to the 247Sports Transfer Portal Rankings, the 6-foot-5, 260-pound player is ranked No. 10 EDGE rusher and No. 72 overall player. It turned into a fierce competition for Baron’s services, with USC, Ole Miss, and LSU among the schools he was considering.

Baron attended Tennessee for four years before transferring to Louisville during the winter transfer portal window. He also looked into possibilities at Ole Miss, Alabama, and Texas. Only a few weeks after making an official visit to Miami, Baron returned to the transfer portal, missing the Cardinals’ spring football game due to a shoulder injury. He is now scheduled to resume his collegiate career in South Florida.

Baron’s best season as a collegiate player came in 2023, when he recorded 28 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and six sacks. Baron was credited with 41 quarterback pressures by Pro Football Focus. Among SEC pass rushers last fall, those 41 pressures were the seventh most. Rueben Bain was credited with 45 quarterback pressures during his excellent 2023 true freshman season, to put that number in perspective.

Baron has accumulated 105 QB pressures during his career.

Over his time in college, Baron has also developed strength against the run. Baron’s run defense performance was rated 72.0 in 2023 by Pro Football Focus and 77.3 in 2022. In 2023, he also became more consistent in his tackling; during the course of the season, PFF gave him credit for just two missed tackles.

Baron joins Bain, Akheem Mesidor, and Marshall transfer Elijah Alston as the four finest defensive end players in the nation, making Jason Taylor and Miami’s roster one of the best in the nation. All together, the club has accumulated 316 quarterback pressures throughout their career.

After the program added Michigan State defensive tackle Simeon Barrow Jr. earlier this month, Baron now has another elite defensive lineman in the room.

Baron’s signing moves the Hurricanes into the top ten of the 247Sports Transfer Rankings and makes him the program’s 15th transfer commitment overall for both cycles. Along with Oregon State running back Damien Martinez, Houston wide receiver Sam Brown, and quarterback Cam Ward, he is the fourth Top 100 transfer prospect to join the program this off-season.
