BREAKING: Miami Hurricanes lands key commitment from Elite edge rusher, flipping him from NC State

The Hurricanes successfully recruited in-state defensive lineman Mykah Newton from NC State on Friday evening. This adds a second defensive end to their Class of 2025.

On that same evening, the Hurricanes secured the commitment of Newberry (Fla.) EDGE Mykah Newton, who had previously committed to NC State this summer over UCF and Michigan State.

Miami extended an offer to the 6-foot-2, 263-pound player in late July and quickly hosted him during their end-of-summer event. A standout contributor with three years of varsity experience, Newton boasts 27 career sacks and 45 tackles for loss, demonstrating his ability to disrupt plays from various positions. The Hurricanes plan to develop him into an interior defensive lineman, as he won’t turn 18 until next summer.

“I feel amazing about Miami,” Newton shared with InsideTheU prior to his announcement. “They’re a great program. I can genuinely see myself there, building a future, which is something my family and I discussed.”

Spending time with the program alongside his family last month played a pivotal role in his decision.

“It was really significant for me. My mom always said, ‘Never block your blessings.’ So we decided to visit to see if it was the right fit for my future. We were praying about it,” Newton shared.

Ultimately, the chance to learn under NFL Hall of Famer Jason Taylor was too good to pass up for the highly motivated rising senior.

“Coach Taylor is genuinely a humble person. Meeting him, you wouldn’t guess he has all those honors. He’s a great guy and a committed coach, always putting in extra effort with the players. During a meeting, he mentioned Rueben Bain wanting to do extra work even when he got tired, showing his dedication to helping his players improve. That matters a lot to me; I pay attention to the little things, and for me, Coach Taylor is a 10/10.”

Newton emphasized that Miami is getting a fiercely competitive player.

“I see myself as very competitive. I’ll compete against anyone, regardless of their star rating or if they’re a senior in college. I’m just a humble guy who will go out and compete with the talents I’ve been given.”

He plans to enroll at Miami as an early graduate this January.

With Newton joining, the Hurricanes now have commitments from 21 prospects in the Class of 2025, ranking them No. 10 nationally.
