Breaking: Maryland confirm another top commitment from a high prospect
The Maryland Terrapins are scheduled to host a visit from 2029 quarterback prospect Justin Merriman, the son of former Chargers star Shawne Merriman. Given that his father played at the University of Maryland from 2002 to 2004, it’s no surprise that Justin might be considering following in his footsteps.

Justin Merriman, who grew up in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, made a name for himself as a standout athlete in the D.C. area. A talented dual-sport competitor, he gained recognition as one of the region’s top basketball players and was named Maryland’s Defensive Player of the Year in football by the Associated Press.

His father, Shawne Merriman, had an impressive collegiate career at Maryland, earning All-ACC honors and receiving the Iron Terp award, given to the team’s strongest player. He was later selected 12th overall in the 2005 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. Merriman went on to have an eight-year NFL career that included winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2005, three Pro Bowl selections, a First-Team All-Pro nod, and leading the league in sacks in 2006.
