Just In: Marlins part ways with another $53 million star, owing a whopping $24,612,903 from his contract

The Miami Marlins cut ties with Avisaíl García, a free agent signing that did not live up to expectations, by designating him for assignment. They are responsible for paying over $24.6 million for the remainder of his contract.

García, aged 32, struggled to perform as anticipated during his time with the team, dealing with multiple injuries and subpar offensive output. Despite signing a four-year, $53 million contract just before the December 2021 lockout, the outfielder failed to deliver for the Marlins.

Having been hampered by a left hamstring strain and posting a meager 2 for 19 (.105) during a recent rehab assignment in Triple-A Jacksonville, García’s time with the team was plagued by setbacks.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker praised García’s character but acknowledged his extensive time on the injured list. García is owed $24,612,903 from his contract, with various payments spread out until 2026.

In the likelihood that García clears waivers and is released, any team could sign him for a prorated share of the MLB minimum salary. García’s performance with the Marlins was disappointing, playing only a limited role in his last few seasons due to a series of injuries.

Despite his struggles with the Marlins, García had a productive season with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021, showcasing his talents before his tenure with the Marlins. Schumaker commended García’s accomplishments in the game, acknowledging that not many players can boast similar achievements.
