TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports that Tanev, 34, is seeking a contract spanning between five to eight years. However, Toronto’s maximum offer stands at seven years, prompting the team to initiate the negotiation by finalizing the trade on Saturday.
Dreger additionally notes that the Leafs are maintaining their focus on defensemen Nikita Zadorov and Oliver Ekman-Larsson, in addition to their interest in Tanev.
Tanev completed the previous season with the Stars following his trade from the Calgary Flames for defenseman Artem Grushnikov and a draft pick on Feb. 28. The 6-foot-2 right-shot defenseman amassed two goals and 19 points in 75 games across the Flames and Stars. He also contributed two assists in 19 playoff games before the Stars were ousted by the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Final.
Having concluded a four-year, $18 million deal with the Flames in October 2020, Tanev is now seeking a new opportunity for his career. Initially joining the Vancouver Canucks in 2010 as an undrafted free agent, Tanev has accumulated 33 goals and 190 points throughout his 782-game career, which spans tenures with the Canucks, Flames, and Stars.
