Kansas Football Program’s Bright Future: Strong Recruiting and Commitments
In a remarkable achievement, the Kansas football program secured one of its most impressive recruiting classes in recent history last year. Following a successful 9-4 season culminating in a bowl victory, the Jayhawks are poised for a promising future under fourth-year Head Coach Lance Leipold.
As spring practices concluded in Lawrence, the coaching staff swiftly shifted focus to recruiting efforts. Leipold and his team have actively engaged with numerous high school prospects and transfer players during recent visits. Despite a relatively quiet period in recruiting, the Jayhawks recently secured their second commitment within the past week, signaling continued momentum for the program.

Kansas Football Adds Fourth Recruit to 2025 Class: RB John Kelly
The Kansas football program has welcomed its fourth commitment for the 2025 recruiting class in the form of running back John Kelly, a 6-foot, 185-pound tailback from Texas. Kelly, hailing from Cypress Christian School, made his decision to join Kansas after an unofficial visit to the campus in March. Known for his explosive running style and powerful presence on the field, Kelly is ranked 796th overall, 61st among running backs, and 130th in Texas in 247 Sports’ Composite rankings for the upcoming graduating class.
Reportedly choosing Kansas over schools like Arizona, Missouri, Washington State, Duke, and Texas Tech, Kelly’s commitment adds depth to the Jayhawks’ roster. Alongside OL Anderson Kopp, the latest additions of Kelly and Kopp complement the existing 2025 class featuring QB David McComb and LB Malachi Curvey. As per 247 Sports, Coach Leipold’s 2025 recruiting class currently ranks 54th nationally and 10th in the Big 12, with potential for adjustments as more recruits join the fold.
With the departure of incoming freshman RB Red Martel to the spring transfer portal, Kelly emerges as a valuable addition for the coaching staff. As Kansas prepares for the post-Devin Neal era following the star ball-carrier’s anticipated NFL journey after the 2024 season, Kelly’s arrival signifies a strategic move to bolster the team’s backfield talent.
