Nebraska football has officially signed Australian punter Archie Wilson to its roster as summer workouts begin.

An official from NU confirmed on Monday morning that Wilson, who visited the campus over the weekend, is now part of the Husker team.

Wilson is a rugby-style punter with experience in Australian Rules Football and trained at Prokick Australia, a program that has successfully helped numerous Australian punters enter college football and the NFL.

By introducing a rugby-style punter, Nebraska aims to leverage college football rules and navigate the challenging winds typical of the Midwest.

Head coach Rhule referred to this strategic choice as a “no-brainer” after observing both rugby-style and traditional punts during spring practices.

Additionally, Nebraska had acquired a punter through the transfer portal in former Washington player Jack McCallister. Special teams coordinator Ekeler had been looking for a rugby-style punter similar to what he utilized at Tennessee, while McCallister left in the spring to transfer to Purdue.

At Tennessee, Ekeler coached Australian punter Jackson Ross, who became an All-SEC punter and a finalist for the Ray Guy Award.

“In the past three years, we’ve allowed just 23 yards in punt returns while accumulating nearly 900 yards ourselves,” Ekeler stated to Tennessee media before the last season when discussing Ross. “Our players take great pride in this… Jackson Ross is one of the most impressive punters I’ve ever worked with. We’ve genuinely developed a system tailored to his skillset. We’ve implemented many strategies during the offseason that I’m really excited to showcase.”

Alongside Wilson, Nebraska also has redshirt freshman punter Kamdyn Koch on the roster.
