He “cannot imagine” Notre Dame defeating the Big Ten juggernaut, seemingly picking Ohio State to win the national championship and hoist the title trophy.
The college football season is soon coming to a close, with one final game left to crown the national champions.
On Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. ET, the Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish will face off in the national championship.
Ohio State enters the game as an 8-point favorite, per ESPN BET.
SEC college football analyst Paul Finebaum discussed the matchup on the latest episode of “The Matt Barrie Show.”
While Finebaum expressed his respect for the Fighting Irish and what they’ve been able to accomplish, heading into the national title game on a 13-game win streak, he believes there’s a potential blowout on the horizon.
Finebaum explained that he “cannot imagine” Notre Dame defeating the Big Ten juggernaut, seemingly picking Ohio State to win the national championship and hoist the title trophy.
“I cannot imagine Notre Dame winning the game,” Finebaum said. “I just can’t. I don’t see it… I think Notre Dame is solid. They’re special team is fantastic, but Ohio State is fantastic across the board. If they play to a high level, this game is not close.”
Ohio State ended the 2024 regular season with a brutal loss to Michigan. They also suffered a previous loss to Oregon, with both games highlighting fans’ doubt that the Buckeyes can win a national championship.
Despite the streaky play in the regular season, the Buckeyes have dominated each of their College Football Playoff opponents in the first three rounds.
OSU defeated Tennessee 42-17 to kick off the College Football Playoff and followed that with a 41-21 victory over Oregon in the quarterfinals and a 28-14 victory over Texas in the semifinals.
The Buckeyes have shown that they’re the deepest team in college football, having stars on both ends of the field, such as Will Howard and Jeremiah Smith on the offensive end as well as Jack Sawyer and Denzel Burke on defense.
While Notre Dame has had success in the postseason, defeating Penn State, Georgia, and Indiana, the Buckeyes seem to be standing on their own pedestal.
