The Hamilton Tiger-Cats made it official on Monday by signing quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa.
Speculation had been circulating for the past few weeks regarding Taulia Tagovailoa’s imminent signing with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. This speculation was confirmed on Monday when the team announced the news on their social media platforms.
In December, Tagovailoa was listed as one of the 10 players on the Tiger-Cats’ CFL negotiation list. After going undrafted in the NFL Draft this year, he tried out for the Seattle Seahawks last month but was not signed by the team.
Originally a backup for the Alabama Crimson Tide, Tagovailoa transferred to the Maryland Terrapins, where his college career flourished. He set records in the Big Ten conference for passing yards with 11,256 and completion percentage at 67.1%. He was honored with Second Team All-Big Ten recognition in 2022 and 2023.
Tua Tagovailoa, starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, is Taulia’s older brother.
Currently, Bo Levi Mitchell holds the starting quarterback position for the Tiger-Cats, indicating that it is unlikely for Tagovailoa to see playing time this season unless there are multiple injuries. This season presents an opportunity for him to learn the Canadian football game from the sidelines, behind Mitchell and Taylor Powell, possibly vying for a starting role in the future.
Powell is viewed as Mitchell’s eventual successor, making him Tagovailoa’s primary competition going forward. The upcoming season will be crucial in determining Tagovailoa’s role in Hamilton’s future plans.
After losing their season opener to the Calgary Stampeders 32-24, the Tiger-Cats are set to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Week 2 at home.
