The New York Giants took a roster action before their Week 7 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, bringing in experienced offensive tackle Chris Hubbard from the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad, according to Dan Salomone of Giants.com.
This decision comes after All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas sustained a season-ending foot injury in Week 6 against the Cincinnati Bengals, which has since been confirmed to need surgery. The Giants had the advantage of a fully healthy starting offensive line during the first six weeks, but now they will need to find a replacement for their top lineman’s contributions. Chris Hubbard, 33, has nine seasons of NFL experience but has mainly served as a backup since 2019. Since the start of the 2021 season, he has played in 14 games, all with the Cleveland Browns and the Tennessee Titans.
Although he was on the 49ers’ practice squad this season, he has yet to see action in an NFL game. It remains uncertain what role the Giants will assign him, but he will likely compete for the starting left tackle position alongside Joshua Ezeudu and Evan Neal. Throughout his career, Hubbard has participated in 2,378 pass-blocking snaps, allowing 21 sacks, 18 quarterback hits, and committing 17 penalties. Last season with the Titans, he surrendered 18 total pressures and four sacks, but impressively did not incur any penalties in nine games, resulting in an overall PFF grade of 68.2.
