A former star at the University of Virginia, has retired from professional basketball at the age of 26. He played a key role in leading the Cavaliers to their first national championship in 2019. On Wednesday, Virginia head coach Tony Bennett announced that Guy will be returning to his alma mater as the Athlete Development Mentor/Special Assistant
“We are thrilled to welcome Kyle and his family back to Charlottesville,” Bennett said. “Kyle is not only one of the best players I’ve ever coached, but also one of the finest young men I’ve met. He will make an immediate impact on our program, working with our players and sharing the expertise and competitive fire he’s gained throughout his collegiate and professional career.”
Guy was the leading scorer for the Wahoos during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, helping Virginia secure 66 wins over those two years. He was also part of a historic moment when Virginia became the first No. 1 seed in men’s basketball to lose to a 16-seed in the first round, falling to UMBC.
However, the following season, the Cavaliers achieved their goal of winning the title. In the Final Four match against Auburn, Guy scored the last six points for Virginia, including three key free throws with just 0.6 seconds left. He was honored as the Most Outstanding Player of the 2019 tournament.
Selected as the 55th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Guy played three seasons in the NBA, appearing in 53 games with the Sacramento Kings and Miami Heat, as well as spending two seasons playing internationally.
Though Guy’s professional playing career has come to an end, he will remain involved in the sport in his new position under Bennett.
