Breaking: Former Texas QB Star Murphy Named Team Captain for Duke Blue Devils

Maalik Murphy has been appointed the starting quarterback for the Duke Blue Devils as he embarks on his first season with the team.

In addition to this role, the former four-star recruit from Texas has received further recognition for the 2024 season, as Duke announced on Friday that he is one of four players selected as team captains.

Murphy will be joined in this leadership role by defensive tackle Aaron Hall, receiver Jordan Moore, and offensive lineman Justin Pickett.

Murphy mentioned earlier this offseason that he plans to closely follow his former Texas teammates this season.

“Absolutely, I can’t wait,” Murphy expressed. “We have many Friday games this year, so I hope they don’t play on Fridays like we do, allowing me to watch them on Saturdays. Definitely my boys. There are a few guys on the team I still talk to every day, so I’m really looking forward to their games.”

Last season, Murphy completed 40 of 71 passes for 477 yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions, participating in seven games and winning both of his starts.

He played a crucial role in Texas’ path to the College Football Playoff. After Quinn Ewers was injured against Houston, Murphy stepped in during the second half, leading the Longhorns to a 31-24 victory. He then threw two touchdown passes to Adonai Mitchell in a 35-6 win over BYU and secured another win against Kansas State in a thrilling 33-30 overtime game the following week.

Murphy and Duke will kick off their regular season on Friday at home against Elon.
