Exactly ten years after claiming a championship with the San Antonio Spurs, a seasoned big man is set to hit the golf course. Former Spurs center Aron Baynes has announced his retirement from basketball, as confirmed by his agent Daniel Molodovan in a post on X on Wednesday.
The boy from Mareeba! Representing you for your entire career has been the honor of a lifetime. You embody everything we teach young athletes about professionalism, dedication and playing for the name on the front of the jersey, not on the back.
Love you Azza! All the very best… pic.twitter.com/bejepCQA2t

The 37-year-old Baynes, who hails from Australia, started his professional career in Europe in 2009 before joining the NBA in 2013. He was part of the San Antonio Spurs team that won the championship in 2014, and he also played for Detroit, Boston, Phoenix, and Toronto later on. Although Baynes didn’t return to the NBA after his time with the Raptors in the 2020-21 season—following an unfortunate fall while playing for Australia at the Tokyo Olympics—he continued his career in Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL) with the Brisbane Bullets from 2022 to 2024. With an NBA championship ring, approximately $38 million in career earnings, and the ability to retire on his own terms, Baynes feels ready to move on.
