Breaking: Former QMJHL Prospect Still Remains Unsigned as RFA with Flames

The Calgary Flames are gearing up for the 2024-25 season, and there’s a lot of buzz surrounding their young restricted free agents (RFAs) that still need to be signed. Among them is Jakob Pelletier, a former QMJHL standout and one of the Flames’ most promising prospects.

Jakob Pelletier: A Rising Star.

Pelletier was drafted third overall by the Moncton Wildcats in the QMJHL and later traded to the Val D’Or Foreurs, where he concluded his junior career. Over his time in the QMJHL, he showcased his scoring prowess, amassing 107 goals and 275 points in 210 regular-season games, along with 9 goals and 31 points in 32 playoff games. His offensive skills, particularly his vision and creativity, caught the attention of the Flames, leading to his selection as the 26th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.

NHL Experience and AHL Success.

Currently, Pelletier has played 37 games in the NHL, contributing four goals and 10 points over two seasons with the Flames. However, he has primarily been honing his skills in the AHL with the Calgary Wranglers (formerly the Stockton Heat). In his rookie AHL season, he impressed with 27 goals and 62 points in just 66 games, finishing second in team scoring as a 20-year-old. Overall, Pelletier has tallied 48 goals and 111 points in 119 regular-season AHL games, along with 9 goals and 20 points in 28 postseason appearances.

Future Outlook.

With the Flames undergoing significant roster changes, including the departure of several key players, it may not be long before Pelletier secures a regular spot on the team. His development is crucial for Calgary as they look to rebuild and strengthen their lineup.

Other Young RFAs to Watch.

Pelletier isn’t the only young player the Flames need to address. They also have other RFAs, including defensemen Nikita Okhotiuk and Ilya Solovyov, as well as former forward Cole Schwindt. The Flames’ management will need to navigate these negotiations carefully to retain their young talent and build a competitive team for the future.

As the Flames prepare for the upcoming season, fans are eager to see how these young players will contribute to the team’s success. With a mix of promising talent and a focus on development, the Flames are poised for an exciting journey ahead.
