Breaking: Former Oregon Ducks’ star refused to be sidelined, may play with broken hand with the Miami Dolphins

When Jevon Holland broke his hand two weeks ago, it was expected that he’d be sidelined for a while. However, there’s now some optimism that the Miami Dolphins safety might not miss any games. The former Oregon Ducks standout fractured a bone in his left hand during the team’s 15-10 victory over the New England Patriots in Week 5, leading to speculation about potential surgery.

Holland was limited in Wednesday’s practice but mentioned to reporters that he’s feeling good. He’s still adapting to playing with the injury and reportedly wore a protective brace on his hand during practice. “I’ve never had this experience before,” Holland stated on Wednesday. “I think it might be tough if I have to play with it bandaged. I’m not entirely sure how it’ll feel. I assume it might be hard to catch the ball since it gets in the way. This is actually my first broken bone, so it feels like a really bad jam.”

Holland informed reporters that his status is “day-to-day,” and no decision has yet been made about whether he will play against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. “Let’s be clear, football players enter the game to play,” Miami head coach Mike McDaniel stated on Wednesday. “He’ll be smart about it and won’t take unnecessary risks by trying to force his way back. But he’s also aware that he’s a key player, and we’re a better team with him on the field. Therefore, I trust that everyone involved will make the right decision for the right reasons, while he spends plenty of time in the training room to ensure he’s ready.

Holland is eager to contribute to his team, though he risks worsening his injury and potentially missing multiple games. His situation is complicated by the fact that he’s in the final year of his contract and hopes to secure a new deal. He understands that a player’s best ability is their availability, and having already missed five games in 2023, any further absences this season could impact his market value.
