Breaking: Flames Bring in Former Predators Defenseman

The Calgary Flames are aiming to enhance competition at their training camp by signing a seasoned defenseman to a professional tryout contract. According to Frank Seravalli from Daily Faceoff, the Flames plan to invite 33-year-old Tyson Barrie for this opportunity.

Last season, Barrie participated in just 41 games with the Nashville Predators but played a total of 85 games combined with the Predators and the Edmonton Oilers in the previous season (2022-23). During that extended season, he achieved 13 goals and 55 points, nearly reaching a career high.

Tyson Barrie’s Offensive Prowess and Career Highlights

Tyson Barrie had his best offensive season in 2018-19 with the Colorado Avalanche, scoring 14 goals and adding 45 assists for a total of 59 points in 78 games. Over his 809-game NHL career, the skilled defenseman has amassed 109 goals and 396 assists for 505 total points, showcasing his two-way abilities.

Barrie was drafted in the third round (64th overall) by the Avalanche in 2009 and made his NHL debut in 2011-12. He has since established himself as a talented puck-moving defenseman, contributing offensively while also playing a solid defensive game.

Potential Fit with the Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames, who are currently well-stocked on their blue line, may be looking to add Barrie’s veteran presence and offensive skills to their lineup. He could potentially slide into a third-pairing role, bolstering the depth of the Flames’ defensive corps.

If the Flames aim to return to the playoffs, Barrie’s experience and production could prove valuable, especially in crucial postseason games. In 47 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, the 32-year-old has recorded 19 assists and 21 total points.

Brayden Pachal, who is currently projected to be the Flames’ third-line right-side defenseman, may face increased competition for his roster spot if Barrie earns a contract through his professional tryout.

Salary Cap Considerations

The Flames have almost $20 million in available salary cap space to potentially sign Barrie if he impresses during his tryout and earns a contract[4]. This financial flexibility could allow the team to further enhance their roster and make a strong push for the playoffs in the upcoming season.
