Just In: Elite-star linebacker commit shuts down his recruitment with Texas Tech

After an intense month of scouting and pursuing recruits, the Texas Tech football program is poised to benefit from its efforts in the 2025 recruiting class. On Monday, the team secured a major recruit in linebacker  from Houston, Texas.

Regarded as a 3-star talent according to 247Sports.com, the 6-foot, 220-pound athlete is ranked as the 59th best linebacker in the nation and the 81st top player in the state of Texas. He stands as the seventh highest-rated recruit in the Red Raiders’ 2025 recruitment pool.

In competition with various other college programs such as Baylor, SMU, TCU, Tennessee, Houston, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, and Utah, Burns received offers from multiple schools. After an official visit to Lubbock on June 14, he has officially committed to Texas Tech.

In his previous season, Burns showcased his skills with notable statistics, recording 73 tackles, including 18.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception.

Apart from football, he also participates in track events like the 100- and 200-meter sprints as well as the shot put.

This marks the second linebacker addition to Texas Tech’s recruiting class for the ongoing cycle. Earlier, back in January, 3-star linebacker Brock Golwas from Flower Mound, Texas, committed to the Red Raiders.

Among the current 17 recruits in Tech’s 2025 class, only six specialize in defensive positions. Therefore, the addition of a player of Burns’ caliber holds significant importance.

Currently ranked at No. 29 nationally, the Red Raiders’ class stands at fourth in the Big 12, trailing behind TCU, West Virginia, and Oklahoma State. However, with more impending commitments expected in the following days and weeks, their ranking is likely to witness an upward trajectory.
