The news that broke on Monday morning in New Jersey drew a collective gasp from Devils fans, as rookie defenseman Seamus Casey was loaned to the Utica Comets in favor of left-shot defenseman Daniil Misyul.
This decision was not entirely unexpected, but it certainly stirred emotions among the fanbase. On Saturday, Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe addressed Casey’s reduced ice time, attributing it to the demanding NHL schedule, which can be tough for a rookie transitioning from college hockey. However, a more significant factor seems to be Keefe’s growing lack of trust in the young player. Keefe noted, “Perhaps our whole group shows up, but for a young guy like Seamus, it’s been kind of piling on,” following the team’s 6-5 overtime loss to the Washington Capitals. Casey saw only 7:35 of ice time as he struggled to keep up with the experienced Capitals team. As a coach, when you lose confidence in a player, it’s tough for them to get back into the game,” Keefe explained.
While Keefe stated he had Casey ready for the next overtime shift, the Devils were defeated before he could be put back on the ice. Though Keefe indicated his loss of trust in Casey, this likely pertains mainly to even-strength situations. His special teams performance suggests he has potential, thanks to his agility and strong hockey IQ. However, the majority of games are played at 5-on-5. Analytically, Casey has posted some of the team’s worst metrics in eight games, including a negative 36-45 scoring chance differential, a 37.32 xGF%, and a 39.05 CF%. Despite his smaller stature, Casey plays assertively, showing a willingness to be physical, utilizing a solid active stick, and closing gaps effectively.
The Devils are looking for him to adapt to the pro pace consistently, which he can work on in the AHL. With the anticipated returns of Luke Hughes and Brett Pesce, Casey will continue his development with the Comets. Perhaps the next time he dons a Devils jersey, the former Michigan Wolverines standout will have made significant progress.
