The Dallas Cowboys are faced with impending contract extensions for several key players, including what is likely to be a significant financial commitment. Alongside potential new deals for quarterback Dak Prescott and star pass rusher Micah Parsons, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is also in line for a substantial payday.
After an impressive first-team All-Pro season, Lamb has just one year left on his rookie contract and has proven himself as one of the league’s top receivers. This has led Bleacher Report writer Alex Ballentine to suggest that the Cowboys are likely to make Lamb one of the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL.
Despite speculation about the future of top receivers in the market, Lamb appears to be the least probable to change teams. Ballentine predicts that Lamb could sign a lucrative five-year,
with an annual salary of 31 million. The Cowboys are believed to have the necessary cap space to facilitate such a deal, considering Lamb’s stellar performance in the 2023 season.
Lamb has shown consistent improvement each year, and his on-field chemistry with Prescott notably flourished in 2023. However, extending Lamb poses a challenge due to Prescott’s own contract situation.
While Prescott is also due for an extension, recent reports suggest that Dallas has not yet presented him with an offer. The Cowboys must approach these significant extensions judiciously to avoid overextending themselves financially.
CeeDee Lamb Achieves Career Highs Lamb has continuously elevated his performance each season, with the standout being his exceptional showing in 2023. The former Oklahoma Sooner set personal records across nearly every statistical category.
According to Sports Reference, his 135 receptions significantly surpassed his previous best of 107 in 2022 and led the NFL. Additionally, his 1,749 receiving yards last season marked a near 400-yard increase from his prior best.
His touchdown numbers also saw a noteworthy uptick, as Lamb secured double-digit scores for the first time in his career with 12 TD catches, along with adding two rushing touchdowns.
In a crucial year where the 25-year-old aimed to maximize his value, Lamb not only strengthened his position with the Dallas Cowboys but also demonstrated that he ranks among the top wide receivers in the league, deserving a commensurate salary.
NFL Executive Suggests Cowboys May Be Underpaying Prescott As mentioned earlier, the Cowboys have yet to extend Prescott and do not appear to be in a hurry to do so. According to The Athletic reporter Mike Sando, an unidentified NFL executive speculates that the team’s lack of significant free agency moves might be setting the stage for a lackluster season for both the team and Prescott.
The anonymous executive remarked, “If the guy wants $60 million a year, you know what we are going to do instead? We are going to have an average team, and you are going to play worse, and we are going to get you at a better price.”
While strategizing for a superior draft pick is not uncommon, deliberately aiming for a lower deal solely to secure a quarterback on more favorable terms is a less conventional approach. The executive’s perspective on Prescott may hold some merit, but it comes across more as a playful jab at the Cowboys rather than a serious strategy.
