BREAKING: Commanders Trade Picks for Charles Leno Jr. Replacement
According to Brent Sobleski from Bleacher Report, the Washington Commanders could consider trading back into the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. This move would come at the cost of giving up two second-round picks but would be justified by the opportunity to replace left tackle Charles Leno with Tyler Guyton.
Sobleski suggests that the Commanders might be able to package their 36th and 40th picks to move back up in the draft. He believes that Tyler Guyton from Oklahoma would be an excellent choice for the Commanders. Guyton’s athleticism and footwork make him a prime candidate to transition from right tackle to left tackle.
By placing a physical specimen like Guyton in the crucial left tackle position, the Commanders would make a strategic move to strengthen their offensive line. This is especially important considering their intention to invest their second-overall pick in the draft on a potential franchise quarterback.
Tyler Guyton Trade Would Be Welcome News for Rookie QB
The Commanders are in need of improved protection on their offensive line, regardless of whether Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, or another quarterback will be leading the team. Last season, the team’s offensive line allowed 65 sacks, prompting a significant overhaul during free agency. This resulted in the release of Leno and the addition of guard Nick Allegretti and center Tyler Biadasz.

Pro Football Focus has highlighted his impressive foot speed and stride length, allowing him to mirror his opponents without overextending himself. His ability to quickly explode off the ball gives him a significant advantage in delivering a strong punch upon contact.
Furthermore, Guyton’s mobility enables him to be a valuable asset in open spaces, making him an ideal fit for the Commanders’ zone-based running game, which is likely to be emphasized under offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.
Considering Guyton’s exceptional qualities, it is worthwhile to acquire him, even if it means sacrificing valuable draft assets. He is highly regarded as a late-first round pick by mock draft writers, including Dane Brugler of The Athletic, who predicts him going 24th overall to the Dallas Cowboys. Additionally, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports envisions Guyton being chosen one pick later and joining the Green Bay Packers.
While giving up second-round value may be difficult, the Commanders cannot afford to take the risk of not securing a credible replacement for Leno.
Commanders Can’t Risk Not Replacing Charles Leno
The Commanders cannot ignore the need to find a reliable option for the blindside, given the team’s ample draft picks. With two second-rounders, three third-rounders, and two fifth-round choices, the Commanders have various options.
They could trade a second and a third to move up to the first round or use a third and a fifth to secure a late second-rounder. Alternatively, they could stay put at 36 and select Houston tackle Patrick Paul, who Brugler recommends and would play alongside his brother, Chris Paul. Regardless of their decision, the Commanders must ensure they address Leno’s departure and safeguard their rookie quarterback’s success.
